One of television's most critically acclaimed programmes, The Wire challenges viewers with a "cop show" unlike anything else on air.
The HBO series addresses the seedy side of Baltimore's finest looking into money, drugs, politics and murder. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.
A study on urban life in one of America's toughest cities, each season of The Wire has focused on a different aspect of Baltimore, starting with the police force and the drug trade, then moving on to City Hall, the education system and concluding with the media. Over the course of five seasons, David Simon has endeavoured to build a city.
It is a groundbreaking, complex and political look at the streets of America, detailed and fiercely intelligent; there is no other show like it on TV.

Great series.all time classic. Don"t waste any more time and watch it NOW
This is the show that makes the Sopranos look like Cagney and Lacey. This is the king of all dvd boxsets, five series of the most amazing, thrilling, complicated, compelling, difficult, rewarding, heart wrenching tv you could ever see. You can buy David Simons book 'homicide on the street' and see where this series comes from (although take out 4 months to read it!) and this series is very like a book, Simon has said that he doesn't care if viewers don't know what's going on when if they come late - his view being that you couldn't pick a book up randomly and understand it why should you with a tv series. Two words of warning, the first few episodes are a bit slow so don't give up and secondly you may have to watch this with sub titles on. There is a lot of Baltimore street slang here which even the actors from the States didn't understand so don't be surprised if you don't either. Of the series it's difficult to say which is best as the standard never really drops, I'd say that the fourth season is my favourite as by this stage we've moved on from the Street drug wars., corruption at city hall, the desperation of the failing ship yards to the education system that can't help the children it's meant to nurture. It's brilliance owes a lot to the child actors, the terror from Marlo and serial killers Snoop and Chris and the amazing dignity shown from ex Police Chief Bunny Colvin. The utter despair and hopelessness of street life in inner cities where the only way to achieve the American dream is in the drugs trade isn't up lifting but is possibly the best TV ever made.. Everyone should have to watch this to realise what TV could be like.
We've watched this before and both of us were so taken by it that we had to see it again and again etc. So that's why we bought the box set!
Gritty, real life, believable drama. Thais has the feel of a true life documentary almost. Riveting viewing.
I'm pleased with the service provided by Zavvi. The boxset arrived on time, was well packaged and was as described.
fast, not damaged and received in very prompt speed. I would recommend and say the price was reasonable for a classic american series
Outstanding police drama, a truly amazing series. This is not the traditional cop show, this is a really realistic drama, a unique one. Very well executed, you won't be disappointed.
I had heard others talking about this series years ago and had also had it recommended by friends, but just dismissed this as another American cop show. But this is a lot more than that. I nearly gave up after the 1st episode, as some the street slang takes a bit to get used to. But I guarantee, if you stick with it, it quickly becomes addictive. As I said this is lot more than your average cop show, there is no conclusion at the end of each episode, the story just develops, you get to know personally the main players in the story, the cops, the corrupt & questionable hierarchy they have to deal with & plus the main players of Barksdale Crew (the bad). The story telling is great & also the character development is awesome, it shows the good & the bad of the main players one of who is the charismatic Detective McNulty played by Dominic West & you also gain some empathy for some of the bad guy's especially D'Angelo played by the brilliantly Lawrence Gillard Jr. I have now seen series 1&2, sometimes doing 3 episodes a night, but cannot wait to watch watch the 3, 4 & 5. Recommended
I bought this series in a boxed set for my 83 year old Mother who is an avid Soprano's fan as I knew just how good it was. My Mum agrees that this tops the Sopranos in its plotting, acting and sheer complexity. She is having sleepless nights watching it as she cannot wait to see what happens next. I hope to borrow it and watch it again soon myself!
This is a really great series, which shows ugly side of big US cities in very deep and meaningful way. This is not only the crime series but social commentary dealing with crime and its roots, impact of closure of factories and docks, politicial corruption, school system and power of the media. Acting is at its best here, even without big names. Also writing and characterisation are superb. There are no black and white characters. Even the agressive and violent gangsters have their good sides, and good cops have bad ones. It has only one disadvantage, while watching it is always one more epizode you want to see, and suddently the whole day passed. I recommend this wholeheartidly.
