Introducing this major new detective franchise Vera starring Academy Award nominee and BAFTA winner Brenda Blethyn as Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. Middle-aged Vera is an experienced, not to mention brilliant, murder detective. Kind-hearted but a loner, she freely admits she can become obsessed with her job.
"Vera: The Pilot
In this feature-length debut, Vera takes on her first murder case since the death of her father. Julie Armstrong (Gina McKee, Notting Hill; The Forsyte Saga), is distraught when she discovers the lifeless body of her teenage son, Luke. He has been strangled and then carefully placed in a bath decorated with wild flowers. Vera and Sergeant Joe Ashworth (David Leon, RocknRolla), have barely begun their investigation when another body turns up and the signs point to a serial killer. When, Luke's sister Laura provides a vital clue and then goes missing, Vera and Joe have a race against time to find the murderer and save Laura's life.
Plus 3 more cases"

Clomping around the countryside in wellies & a very unattractive hat, Brenda Blethyn (as Vera) has brought to life a character I hope we see a LOT more of. She is blunt, does not suffer fools gladly and could be a most unlikeable person, but Blethyn somehow gives her heart. I bought this DVD without knowing anything about the series (live overseas) and have been raving about it to all my friends. I hope a second ( and third!) series are on the cards as it is a very appealing, visually attractive and well acted piece of British drama - you guys really know how to do it well! It also nice to see 'real' people - not every character is perfect, as one tends to see in US series. Your mature leading ladies are all stunners - they really can act - Mirren, Dench, Blethyn - just 3 of many superb actors who would not be cast in a lead role in a US series. A most definite 5 star experience!!
