Whisky Galore! ranks among the most popular and best-loved of Ealing Studio's comedies, included on the British Film Institute's list of the 100 Best British films of the 20th Century.
When a ship carrying 50,000 cases of whisky runs aground, the inhabitants of a Scottish island cannot resist the temptation to replenish their depleted supplies. Only an English Home Guard captain, brilliantly played by Basil Greenwood, stands in their way.
The first film from Ealing stalwart Alexander Mackendrick, who went on to direct The Ladykillers and The Man In The White Suit, Whisky Galore! is a 100% proof comedy classic, now digitally restored and remastered to its former glory.

This is a wonderful black and white film from Ealing Studio. Definitely worth the price.
Whisky Galore is one of those films with the qualities of a fairy story. The basic scenario is unlikely, the characters are over the top and the plot revolves around a struggle between ordinary folk and the powerful - in this case it's the Customs and Excise. Its also as charming as any fairy story, often funny, and it masquerades as a moral tale while actually preaching subversion (although it has a half-hearted go at rectifying that in its final moments). There is some surprisingly good acting and the black-and-white print is excellent in this remastered version. Suspend your disbelief, pour yourself a dram o the good stuff and enjoy!
