The Full Moon Rises

Released in 1981, An American Werewolf In London is a comedy-horror film by writer/director John Landis. Originally, financiers turned down Landis’s script (which was written in 1969) because of tonal issues, forcing him to focus on other projects. However, after finding success with these projects (such as The Kentucky Fried Movie, National Lampoon's Animal House, and The Blues Brothers), Landis received the necessary funding from PolyGram Pictures.

The plot centres around Jack Goodman (Griffin Dunne) and David Kessler (David Naughton), two American backpackers from New York, as they make their way across England. While out in the countryside, they stray from the road and into the moors, where they are attacked by a wolf-like creature that transforms into a man upon being killed. David is injured, and Jack doesn’t survive.

Jack later appears as a member of the undead, warning David that he will transform into a werewolf during the next full moon unless he kills himself. Sceptical, David refuses to take action and ends up slaughtering members of the London public while transformed. This leads to a series of brutal killings.

Like many of Landis’s other films, An American Werewolf In London became hugely successful, winning the 1981 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup. The movie also spawned a sequel: An American Werewolf In Paris (1997).
