The Prince Of Darkness

The archetypal embodiment of a vampire, Count Dracula first appeared in author Bram Stoker’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, which was originally published in 1897. Told as an epistolary (a collection of newspaper articles, diary entries, and letters), the story follows a number of individuals who encounter the aptly named Prince Of Darkness: Jonathan Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra, Quincey Morris, Dr. John Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Renfield.

In 1992, a live-action film adaptation — one of many — was released in cinemas: Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Starring Gary Oldman as the eponymous vampire, the movie provides its own interpretation of the source material, the plot focusing on the count’s infatuation with Mina (Winona Ryder), who he believes is the reincarnated form of his deceased wife, Elisabeta (Ryder). He travels to England in the hopes of winning her affection, but she remains loyal to her partner, Jonathan (Keanu Reeves). Nevertheless, the count’s desires are not so easily dissuaded, and he attempts to coerce the young woman by transforming her into a creature of the night.

The origins of the character were further explored in Dracula Untold (2013), a film that features actor Luke Evans as Vlad The Impaler. To protect the people of Wallachia from the Ottoman Empire, he acquires the powers of a vampire. Although the effects are temporary, Vlad must resist the urge to drink human blood lest he forever lose his humanity.
