The Curse Of The Zodiac

Published from 1998 to 2006, Fruits Basket (Fruba — named after a popular Japanese school game) is a manga series by Natsuki Takaya (the writer and illustrator). The title was released periodically in Hana To Yume, a manga magazine owned by Hakusensha. A 26-episode anime adaptation premiered in 2001, followed by a second anime in 2019.

Centred around the high-school student Tohru Honda, Fruits Basket picks up following the death of her mother. As a result, she ends up living alongside her grandfather. However, circumstances cause her to move out and live by herself in a tent. Shortly after, Tohru discovers the home of her classmate Yuki Soma and his family. Following a landslide, she moves into their house and meets Kyo and Shigure.

Tohru quickly discovers the Soma family secret after Kyo turns into a cat before her very eyes. As it turns out, the Somas are possessed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac. When subjected to stress, embarrassment, weakness, or being hugged by a person of the opposite gender, they unwittingly transform into their respective animal.

Promising to keep their secret to herself, Tohru continues living with the family. She makes it her mission to break the curse that binds them to the zodiac, leading her to encounter the Soma’s vengeful spirits.

Takaya created a spin-off series in 2015, which was titled The Three Musketeers Arc. This story focuses on the eponymous Three Musketeers — Ayame Sohma, Hatori Sohma, and Shigure Sohma.
