Full Metal Jacket is a critically acclaimed 1987 British-American war film. Directed and co-written by esteemed film director Stanley Kubrick, the film successfully added to his expanding roster of timeless movies.

Based on the 1979 novel ‘The Short Timers’ by Gustav Hasford, Full Metal Jacket recounts the Vietnam war in vivid detail. While not a direct true story, the novel drew heavily from Hasford’s experiences during the Vietnam war as a Marine correspondent, granting Kubrick’s adaptation a level of authenticity missing from many entries in the war film genre.

Full Metal Jacket attempted to capture Hasford’s depiction of the reality of war in cinematic detail, taking the audience on an eye-opening journey through the events of this harrowing conflict.

Following an American military unit, Full Metal Jacket stars Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Dorian Harewood, Vincent D’Onforio, R. Lee Ermey, Arliss Howard, and Ed O’Ross. This stellar cast brings the film together in a passionately articulated bow, drawing on the mentality of soldiers serving during this violent war.

Starting in the earliest days of basic training and transitioning fluidly into the carnage of war itself, Full Metal Jacket shows the sad truth of how effectively soldiers can be dehumanised, allowing them to carry out acts of violence that would normally be considered abhorrent.

Featuring accurate depiction of soldiers and their drill instructors, Full Metal Jacket is both a cinematic masterpiece and a film closely treasured by many a serving marine to this day.

Realised faithfully based on studies of authentic photographs and documentaries, Kubrick managed to uncover the essence of the Vietnam war in a way never before captured on film.

Supported by and drawing on the experience of his civilian correspondent, Michael Herr, Kubrick managed to develop the dark comedy aspects that perforate this iconic film.
