Marvel’s Best Marksman

The greatest archer in the Marvel Universe, Hawkeye — also known as Clint Barton — was created by Stan Lee (writer) and Don Heck (artist), his first comic-book appearance being in Tales Of Suspense #57 (1964). Although he is known for his superhero status, the character started his tight-wearing career as a villain, using his carnival-learned marksmanship skills to aid the Soviet Union spy Black Widow, who was trying to steal technology designed by Tony Stark (Iron Man). Eventually, he abandoned his criminal path and chose to join the Avengers.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a shared world of superhero films, will recognise the character for his portrayal by actor Jeremy Renner. His live-action debut was marked by a brief cameo in Thor (2011), which saw Barton guarding the God of Thunder’s hammer, Mjolnir. In 2012, his role was greatly expanded for Avengers Assemble, an ensemble movie that placed the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent alongside Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

In addition to his multiple film appearances, Barton also received his own self-titled TV series, which released on the Disney+ streaming service in 2021. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), the show sees the character reunited with his family, all of whom were victims of Thanos. As he attempts to make up for lost time, the demons of his past threaten to resurface, and he must protect Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a would-be hero, from the enemies of his former vigilante persona, Ronin.
