Not Your Ordinary Disney Princess

Mulan (1998) is an animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, it is based on the ancient Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. The film features the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer, and BD Wong — amongst other well-known voice actors.

The story follows the daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou, Fa Mulan, who only seeks to bring pride and honour to her family. When the Hun Invasion takes hold of China, she impersonates a man and joins the army in his place. Mulan is able to pass as a soldier, although her military skills are initially lacking, and through hard work and determination, she proves herself worthy of respect. However, after saving the life of Captain Li Shang, Mulan’s commanding officer, her identity is discovered, and she is expelled from the army.

Despite this setback, when the Huns resurface and attempt to kill the emperor, Mulan is the only one who can save China.
