The Clone Wars Begins

After the monumental success of the original trilogy, fans were eager to explore the origins behind their favourite characters. There were many questions still unanswered: What was the Clone Wars? How did Anakin Skywalker become the infamous Darth Vader? Why did Obi-Wan Kenobi exile himself to the remote desert planet of Tatooine? Thankfully, director George Lucas was more than happy to provide the answers.

In 1999, Lucasfilm released the first instalment in this new trilogy: Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. This film introduces audiences to Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) when he was still a young Padawan and his master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). Together, they attempt to protect the queen of Naboo, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman). Their mission takes them off world to Tatooine, where they discover a young slave called Anakin Skywalker (Jake Matthew Lloyd), who was born of the Force. Qui-Gon desires to train him as Jedi, which sets the young child on his path.

The second film, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack Of The Clones, picks up many years after its predecessor. With Qui-Gon murdered by the Sith Lord Darth Maul (Ray Park), Obi-Wan has taken on the responsibility of training Anakin (Hayden Christensen) in the ways of the Force. After a subsequent assassination attempt on Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan sets out to discover the culprits. This leads him to Kamino, where he finds an army of clone soldiers waiting to serve the Galactic Republic. As more and more planets join the Separatists, a confederacy led by the fallen Jedi Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), the Clone Wars begins.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith concluded the prequel trilogy, finally revealing how Anakin became Darth Vader. The narrative picks up three years into the Clone Wars, and shows how Supreme Chancellor Palpatine manipulates the valiant Jedi hero into turning to the dark side.
