Seven Is The Magic Number
Published under WildStorm (a label of DC Comics), The Boys originated as a comic book by Garth Ennis. The plot, unlike most traditional titles in the industry, focuses on the eponymous adversaries of a collective of seemingly archetypal superheroes known as the Seven, which comprises Homelander, Black Noir, Queen Maeve, A-Train, the Deep, Translucent, and Starlight. On the surface, they appear altruistic, evidently using their powers for the good of humanity; however, their celebrity status has corrupted them to the core, and what happens behind the scenes is anything but heroic. To inhibit the Seven’s ability to cause harm, the CIA calls upon their most unconventional squad, the Boys: Billy Butcher, Mother’s Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and Hughie Campbell. Each of them uses a serum that grants ordinary people extraordinary abilities, and this levels the playing field, allowing them to tackle the Supe community head on.
In 2019, the popular comic book was adapted to live-action TV, bringing a plentiful supply of hyper violence. The basic premise is largely the same, but there are some key differences, such as the titular characters — played by Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell), Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk), Tomer Capon (Frenchie), and Karen Fukuhara (the Female) — not having access to the power-giving drug. Popular like its source material, the show spawned two spin-offs, one of which was called The Boys Presents: Diabolical.
