Very good visual novel

Danganronpa is one of the few japanese visual novels available in EU, so it's a must buy. Gameplay wise is a mix of Ace Attorney and 999, with great focus on trials.

DanganRonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

DanganRonpa is an excellent game with more depth than your typical visual novel. It presents the player with fresh gameplay in the form of court cases - almost akin to the Ace Attorney series of games. It gives them the ability to become friendly and get to know the game's over a dozen characters - not unlike the popular Persona series of games. On top of this it also presents amazing writing, both in terms of the story and characters, throughout the entire 15+ hour run through of the main game - Similar to the similarly labelled Virtue's Last Reward. The game's downsides are few and far between. The characters can be cliche at times, which is especially noticeable if you watch any amount of anime. This may be appealing to some but a turn off to others. It seems to be unavoidable with so many fleshed out characters you can become familiar with so it's a marvel that they managed to iron out most of the negativity associated with this. There are also a few aspects of the story which are far-fetched and convoluted to say the least, but thankfully the good greatly overshadows the bad in this respect. If you enjoyed or think you would enjoy any of the games I mentioned above, if you're looking for fun gameplay with a great whodunit story or if you simply want to play something a bit different, I thoroughly recommend DanganRonpa.

A must have for visual novel fans

DanganRonpa is the best visual novel I've played, and the only one I've bothered to complete (Including Virtues Last Reward by the same developer). Each character has a unique personality and for a cast of 16 or so characters it's surprising how much care has been put into each and every one. Writing is often funny and interesting and the translation is solid. You play as Makoto, an all around average Joe who has been lucky enough to get into one of the best highschools in the world. Makoto then wakes up after fainting on the schools opening day to find he's trapped inside with the other students, and a psychopathic talking bear who forces them to play "The Killing game". The goal is to murder another student without anybody else finding out and you'll be free to leave. Main gameplay consists of investigating crime scenes, finding plotholes in other students' "alibi's" during the class trial and sorting out the guilty from the innocent. The game does a good job of explaining the mechanics and I often found myself thankful for the hints the game offered from time to time as the number of evidence pieces and talking points where I was tasked to find a contradiction in a fellow students sentence occasionally overwhelmed. The game also offers you "Free time" in which you can get to know your classmates not entirely unlike Persona's social link element. There's some good songs here and there, and the whole game has a slight eerie feel too it as DanganRonpa doesn't shy away from when it needs to be suitably dark. Both Japanese and English audio are present which is a nice touch, though admittedly a few of the audio clips for characters voices can get quite repetitive. Overall I'm glad I bought Danganronpa, the interesting storyline and light gameplay offers a solid campaign length. And character art, in-game movies and songs can all be bought from the menu after completion (Which can be used for some cool Vita backgrounds). I look forward to buying the sequel which is coming out later this year 8/10 It also arrived the day after release so thanks to Zavvi for that

Excellent murder mystery visual novel

Crazy game with larger than life characters, a really in depth story and plot twists and turns that'll keep you guessing right the way through each of the trials! There is exploration gameplay similar to hotel dusk! Trial and investigation gameplay similar to pheonix wrights but with a bit of a twist! A lot of thematical and stylistic similarities can also be drawn to zero escape: virtue's last reward. Visual style and friendship building is quite reminiscent of persona 4! There is a crazy, psychotic (evil?) bear called monokuma who like the bunny (zero III) from zero escape entirely makes the game worth playing!
