What Is Figma?

Heiling from Japan, the figma series is an action figure line produced by Max Factory and distributed by Good Smile Company. As a counterpart to the Revoltech line, figma was first envisioned by Max Factory CEO Max Watanabe and Masaki Asai.

Each figma action figure places an emphasis on articulation and features a variety of accessories, including swappable faces and hands. Thanks to this focus on quality, the figma line has been given wide media attention in its native country by sites such as Famitsu and Dengeki Hobby.

Primarily, figures are modelled after significant influences in Japanese pop culture, relating to anime, manga, and video games – sometimes delving into sculpted recreations of real-life individuals, such as Billy Herrington, and western characters.

High-Quality Action Figures

The figma series is widely applauded for its focus on articulation and character accuracy. Made from ABS and PVC, each figure measures between 13-16cm (reflecting the height of the character) and comes with a stand. With various different parts, such as faceplates and hands, it is easy to form new combinations that serve to entirely reinvent each figure.

During the early days of the line, Max Factory produced a special edition Haruhi Suzumiya, which was included with the limited edition PS2 game Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi.

Since then, figma action figures have spawned numerous off-shoot products lines: di:stage, ex:ride, figma vehicles, figEX, figma styles, and figma plus. These provide in-scale additions for use with existing products (display units, accessories, etc.) and other products that do not fit the usual mould of the figma line.
