One of the most important and influential film makers in cinematic history, Akira Kurosawa directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. His final masterpiece, RAN has been beautifully restored in 4k, approved by Director of Photography Shôji Ueda.

A reimagining of Shakespeare's King Lear set in feudal Japan, RAN tells the story of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amongst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryû – Tôno Monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe). This leads to a brutal and bloody war between the brothers for absolute power of the kingdom.

A must have for any collector

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

When I decided that Ran was something that I definitely needed to see, Zavvi was the first option that appeared for purchasing a high quality 4k transfer of this disc. The film comes in a nice slipcover case, and contains three disks, 4k ultra, blu-ray, and special features. The product arrived during the timeframe that I was told it would arrive, and it arrived in good shape. Keep in mind however the this is a region B blu-ray, and that in order to watch it, you will need to own a region free blu-ray player. Besides this one unfortunate aspect, I highly suggest you pick this up if you are a Kurosawa fan, are a collector of blu-rays, or just as a casual fan of movies

Working my way through Kurosawa's filmography, this one is great and the 4K presentation is fantastic and definitely worth the purchase, highly recommend.

Only Get It If You Don't Already Own Ran

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

This sadly appears to be little different from the blu ray release preceding it, and doesn't appear to have benefited from much of an upgrade. I would say that this film is most definitely worth watching and indeed owning, and if you don't already have it on blu ray then do go for this release. However, if you have the blu ray release, make peace with that version and leave it there because you won't get much better than that!

Ran 4K UHD

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

The new release is definitely an improvement on Studiocanal's Blu-ray. The colours, especially the greens, looked teal on the Blu-ray, but this problem has been fixed on the UHD.

Kurosawa at his best

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

This is probably the great man's second greatest work after Seven Samurai.Stunning set pieces, location and sets.Kurosawa had a way of bringing out the best in his cast and this is no exception, every character is well played with some stunning performances. His use of location a sets along with the now famous use of the silences in the dialogue makes this film a masterpiece of Japanese, indeed any cinema making event.A must for anyone interested in masterclass movie making
