Originally rejected by the BBFC on its original release for being "against nature", this first and best screen adaptation of H. G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau is a taboo-flaunting, blood-curdling spectacular, and one of Hollywood's wildest, most notorious, pre-Code pictures.

Shipwrecked and adrift, Edward Parker finds himself a guest on Dr. Moreau's isolated South Seas island, but quickly discovers the horrifying nature of the doctor's work and the origin of the strange forms inhabiting the isle: a colony of wild animals reworked into humanoid form via sadistic surgical experiments. Furthermore, Parker quickly begins to fear his own part in the doctor's plans to take the unholy enterprise to a next level.

Featuring a peerlessly erudite and sinister performance by Charles Laughton as the diabolical doctor, a sterling appearance by Bela Lugosi as the half-beast-half-man "Sayer of the Law", and sensationally atmospheric cinematography by the great Karl Struss (Murnau's Sunrise, Mamoulian's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), Island of Lost Souls now returns to claim a central position among the most imaginative and nightmarish fantasies from Hollywood's golden age of horror.

The Nightmare of the House of Pain

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

This adaptation of ‘The Island of Dr Moreau’ by H. G. Wells comes from the early 1930’s when horror films had just been created and were already pushing at the boundaries. It was banned in Britain because the censor thought it was too horrible till the late 1950’s. The film explores the horror of Moreau’s animal people, created through the mad science of Charles Laughton’s smirking white-suited doctor. Moreau keeps his animal people in line, with the memory of the surgery they experienced in the place that they call 'The House of Pain'. When a young man is stranded on his island, Mourea decides to introduce him to his greatest creation Lota, a woman formed from a panther.Laughton sells the role of someone who believes that everything strives towards the human form and asks “Do you know what it means to feel like God?” The art and set-design of Moreau’s base and the jungle are great. This is not as well known as some of the Universal horror films but is one of the best and the darkest of the 1930’s horror films.

classic horror

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Early black and white version of the H G Wells classic tale. Little seen horror well acted and conceived with strong performances from the lead actors - modern audiences may wonder why Island of Lost Souls provoked so much antagonism and revulsion but the concept is truly unsettling. For fans of classic black and white horror of the 30's and 40's it is well recommended.
