Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 – A New Generation, New Challenges, and Endless Possibilities

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 takes the franchise in an exciting new direction, introducing a second generation of idols while maintaining the heart and energy that made the first season stand out. Picking up shortly after Leila’s loss to Sunny Passion, the season explores the weight of expectations. With their rivals openly acknowledging Leila as their only true competition, the group gains immense popularity—but this backfires when new students feel intimidated from even trying to join. Despite this, four new members—Kinako (the outsider), Shiki (the scientist), Mei (the superfan), and Natsumi (the influencer)—take up the challenge, though bridging the skill gap proves to be an ongoing struggle. A major theme this season is uncertainty. Everything feels like a balancing act, from Keke’s potential return to Shanghai (a secret only Sumire knows) to the arrival of a mysterious new competitor shaking up the rankings. Even the question of whether idols should perform for fun or take it seriously adds another layer of tension. Yet, through strong character writing and great chemistry between the cast, Leila tackles these challenges head-on, making for one of the most dynamic Love Live! series to date. The mix of comedy and drama is a standout. Sumire and Keke’s “old married couple” act is a constant highlight, Ren discovering video games leads to hilarious moments, and Shiki’s wild inventions keep things unpredictable. The show also takes visual risks, using unique framing techniques, immersive first-person perspectives (such as a Beat Saber-like sequence), and creative camera angles during Natsumi’s social media antics. These small details add a level of energy and innovation that sets it apart. Kanon remains the heart of Superstar!!, growing from a shy girl afraid to sing to a true leader who inspires others. She convinces Natsumi to take a chance on idols and stands firm in defending Leila’s path. Her journey even takes on a near-mythical quality, with a “Gundam villain” figure representing her own doubts—doubts she and Leila must overcome together. Meanwhile, the pandemic-era setting subtly shapes the story, with competitions relying more on virtual updates, pushing the girls to craft their own stage performances. The animation remains sharp, with strong musical and dance sequences complemented by gorgeous settings, including winter landscapes that add atmosphere. With no major production delays like Season 1, the show flows smoothly, making for an immersive experience. As Superstar!! moves into its third season, Kanon has grown beyond her initial world. Where does she go from here? With the potential to explore international stages or take on a mentorship role, the possibilities are vast. If Season 3 maintains this level of storytelling, Superstar!! may solidify itself as one of the strongest entries in the franchise.
