Out of the Furnace - Stars burn bright

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Casey Affleck and Christian Bale simmer with star quality in this hard and brutal film. Don't expect this film to be fun. It is grim and dark, but with great performances, including from Woody Harrelson and Willem Dafoe. Set in a grim town with a mill as the main employer this is the story of two brothers who are down on their luck and need a break in their lives. Affleck is great as the younger brother who returns from Iraq to gambling debts and resorts to bare knuckle fighting to make a,living, whilst how elder brother Bale works in the mill. But things take a turn for the worse and the film becomes a story of revenge. A good film, but grim. Not one to sit down and watch with the wife.
