Credited with bringing Japanese cinema to worldwide audiences, Rashômon was filmmaking giant Akira Kurosawa's breakthrough film and the one which cemented the pairing of Kurosawa and Toshirô Mifune as the most prominent actor-director coupling in Japanese Cinema.

Commercially successful on its original release, the film broke records for a subtitled film at the box office, while also being hugely influential on a number of filmmaker, such as George Lucas. Its ground breaking use of flashbacks which reveal events from subjective viewpoints has been imitated many times since.

Delving deep into the human psyche to investigate the philosophy of justice and truth, Rashômon tells the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife from four conflicting points of view.

This all-time classic of world cinema is presented on Blu-ray for the first time.

Masterpiece

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

There are some films that mark the history of cinema (to paraphrase another great film) as before this and after this; Rashomon is one of those films. It is definitely the master-piece of both Kurosawa (Dir) and Miyagawa (DoP) and is a universal tale - you don't need to understand cultural issues to understand what this film is telling you. Ignore all the nonsense about the postmodern nature and lack of truth in the story - just pay attention to what the Commoner says to the Woodcutter and Priest he makes clear whats going on. Do yourself a favour and watch this one film even if you never watch a foreign language film again you won't want to miss this one.
