Starring Dominic West (The Wire, 300), Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Oscar-nominee Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake), The Awakening is the chilling new supernatural thriller from Nick Murphy. In post-World War I England in 1921, an author and paranormal skeptic (Hall) is invited to a countryside boarding school by the head master (West) to investigate rumours of an apparent haunting. But just when she thinks she has debunked the ghost theory, she has a chilling encounter which makes her question all her rational beliefs.

The Awakening is one of those films where one viewing is not enough, and two is too many, as the vast plotholes will become more obvious. The story is classic - sad woman ghostbuster is summoned to de-haunt a boarding school, where one of the boys has topped himself, after being scared witless by the resident ghost. There is lots of tension, supernatural and sexual enough to keep interest. Having watched this once, I am looking forward to watching with the directors commentary, maybe that will answer the big question of the ending, is she or isn't she?
