This is a really brilliant film, worth watching more than once.

VERY good

I am a big fan of the Hughes Bros and (obviously) Denzel but from the trailer I was not so sure that this would deliver - but I was dead wrong. It's a superb action thriller with one hell of an ending. ACES

The Book of Max

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Are you tired of replaying your Mad Max trilogy? Then look no further than Denzel's latest offering. Playing a 'man with no name' role, Denzel travels a post-apocalyptic planet carrying the last remaining bible. He is certainly on bible-basher, only likely to bash heads along the way. Denzel is forced to contend against Gary Oldman's town leader who believes that the Bible's words and beliefs can be used to garner further power and forge the survivors together. This is the story of two opposing views and is amazingly stylish. The acting is effective, although I do wish that casting directors would cast against type (for instance, I would have loved to see Denzel and Gary swap roles, imagine Denzel in such an amoral role). The action, although relatively sparse (in comparison to 'The Road Warrior') due to the necessity of the story, is impressive and reflective of a modern-day western. Only the ending is a disappointment, with a 'twist' that to me seems tacked on. Nevertheless I would recommend this (although the sound of my wife salivating over Denzel was a bot off-putting).
