Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as "nine times more suspenseful" than its predecessor, was The Cat O' Nine Tails.

When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute's scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis, Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco's young niece, may also be in killer's sights...

This second entry in the so-called "Animal Trilogy" found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O' Nine Tails remains one of Argento's most suspenseful and underrated films.

Another great boxset

A good film with good extras and a fantastic box with great matching artwork, poster, cards and booklet. I'm loving the Argento 4k limited editions, they look so good together.

More 4K Argento

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

To be honest, I was not a big fan of this movie, and out of all Arrow Argento releases, this is the one I would always put at the bottom of the list. Still, it is worth checking it out again in the new great-looking 4K transfer, not to mention the wealth of extras included (as Arrow usually does). The included book is a very interesting read, with Argento's own essay about the film. Packaging is, again, top-notch and another great work from the Arrow team, with a very nice looking new illustration done, poster, original artwork for the disc case, and a few art cards too.

High Quality release from Arrow……..again!

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

Having purchased Demons 1 & 2 & Crystal Plumage I had to get my claws into this release. This was one of those films I had seen when much younger not knowing what the “Giallo” genre was. When I first noticed the Arrow treatment it was a no-brainier really and I was not disappointed. The film itself is great and the picture quality with Dolby Vision is a treat. I can recommend this set even though there are slightly less additional materials when compare to the other Argento releases. I just hope Arrow are getting on with a 4K transfer for the other film in the animal trilogy “Four Flies on Grey Velvet.”

Although I do prefer the Blu-Ray Arrow box set artwork better, this is a still fantastic release. Well worth the purchase before it sells out
