Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins a Norwegian scientific team in Antarctica that has discovered an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, and an organism that seems to have died in the crash. When an experiment frees the alien, a shape-shifting creature with the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. Paranoia soon spreads like an epidemic as they're infected, one by one, and a thrilling race for survival begins... The Thing is a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same name.

The Thing 2011

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

John Carpenters Thing is one of my all time favourite films, so I approached this film with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I have to say I that I was pleasantly surprised. There isn't a lot of room to manoeuvre with the plot/special effects etc, as the film events have to lead seamlessly into it's sequel, and the Thing itself has to mutate in a similar fashion to the Carpenter film (itself a remake/re-imagining). The film achieves this pretty well, with good CGI (not quite as gross as the practical effects of the Carpenter film), and characters who aren't completely throw away. If you liked the Carpenter film then you'll most likely enjoy this, although not quite as much!

The Thing Remake or prequel?

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

After reviewing The Thing on bluray, I must admit that the staff beyond the making of this so called prequel really wanted to homage the 1982's version. They left nothing without explanation, everywhere that Kurt Russel's crew went or passed was very well explained. The movie uses a lot of pratical effects, which I stil prefer, but also CGI. It's a very cool movie and it remind us of how good the carpenter's version still is after all these years. The video and audio on the bluray edition is top noch. The documentaries are enough, direct without trying to hard to fill the bluray with unwanted extras. I think it's a must buy for all the fans of the 1982 version. I bought it and I'm glad I did!

Excellent Blu-Ray with good exras.

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

This is a very good release of one of the most surprising (and best) horror films of past twenty years. The Thing is so much more than remake or re-cycling of old ideas. This is actually superior film to Carpenter's 80's classic. That film was brilliant with thick atmosphere and impressive effects. This is still way more ambitious when it comes to ideas and even more creepy and terrifying. Everyone who loves sci-fi horror with brains has to see this film. This is the best blu-ray release around right now so if you are planning to get it then buy this release from Zavvi. If only they had steelbook release for this masterpiece. Anyway, highly recommended.
