Zavvi Exclusive Limited Edition Steelbook.

Obey. Submit. Consume. Watch TV. Do not question authority. Money is your god. No independent thought. No Imagination. They live. We sleep.

Professional WWF wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Powder plays John Nada, a homeless, unemployed construction worker who discovers a pair of sunglasses that when worn suddenly reveal a world run by upwardly mobile, capitalist, yuppie aliens intent on keeping the human race sedate and brainwashed with subliminal messages fed through advertising and the media. Luckily for us all John Nada wants to do now is chew gum and kick ass, and he's all out of gum.

They Live is one of John Carpenters most accomplished films. An action packed, satirical, sci-fi adventure and socio-cultural critique on the decline of spiritual values and the rise of consumerism within modern society. It also include one of the longest fist fights in the history of cinema.

A decent release of a Carpenter classic

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Studiocanal's previous Blu-ray of They Live was so bad they never actually released it to the general public. Thankfully this one is a lot better. Unlike the unreleased disc this comes from an proper HD master, as opposed to being an SD up-scale. It's a little rough around the edges - the aspect ratio changes very slightly a few minutes into the film and there are various nicks and scratches here and there - but its's a pretty competent, and above all filmic transfer on the whole. The advertised DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is not on the disc; instead we get the original 2.0 Stereo audio in English, French and German. While I'm fine with the original audio I'm less impressed that the specs are incorrectly listed on the J-Card... In any case, the audio does the job and is authentic to the theatrical experience (the 5.1 remixes on the other DVDs and Blu-rays aren't that good anyway). A big positive is the inclusion of what looks to be all of the extras found on the US Blu-ray release, which includes a commentary with Carpenter/Piper, interviews with the director and stars, a couple of making of featurettes, and some TV spots and trailers. For those who don't know, the US release from Shout! Factory has terrible contrast/colour boosting, digital noise reduction, and artificial sharpening (why make it blurry only to sharpen it again?). If you like edge enhancement and generally poor looking Blu-rays you'll be okay, but if not this disc is a much better all-round bet. To get super-geeky, this transfer is the same as the Japanese release of the film, which was very similar to the Italian release except for the fact that the distributors decided to crop the top and bottom of the picture slightly. It's not a major disaster, but it is annoying when you consider that the Italian release already showed less picture information than the US disc. Personally I'll sacrifice a little bit of picture info at the top and bottom of the frame for the more natural image on this disc any day of the week. The quality of the Steelbook packaging itself is great, featuring as it does a striking re-working of the old DVD artwork along with quotes from the film and a mono image of Roddy piper inside. This is one of John Carpenter's last great films and the Blu-ray makes for a very worthy addition to your collection. If you're listening Studiocanal, can we please have decent versions of Escape from New York, The Fog and Prince of Darkness next?

O.K ...Ordered this little gem from Zavvi and in no time it was in my hands, from U.K to New Zealand in under 7 days, the steelbook itself is beautiful and would look amazing in anyones steelbook collection...however buyer beware as this is the studio canal release, the information slip surrounding the steelbook informs you that the audio is DTS Master Audio 5.1,you will soon discover that this is not the case but in fact you are greeted with a DTS Stereo mix only, huge let down for me as really the correct audio should have been printed on the slipcase...the good points otherwise are a fantastic H.D picture plus all the extras that are available on the Shout Factory Region A locked release are on this version as well..if it was not for the audio and the incorrect information on the slipcase I would say perfect however this problem needs to be fixed as I am sure there will many other of you out there who might be a little dissapointed as I was with the incorrect audio. If you are looking for the 5.1 DTS Master Audio versions you will either have to purchase the Shout Factory release or the Umbrella region B release which although does not have all the extras it does come with the audio 5.1 as stated.

Put on the glasses!

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

I first saw this film streamed on my phone. I really enjoyed it. The film kind of reflects the situation we are in today. We are told what to ware, read, watch eat and do. Just some of use have woken up and have learnt to do things our own way. That doesn't mean us that have woken are better as it is probably easier to stay asleep and get on with life that way. For an 80s classic by none other than John Carpenter, this eye opener is a lot of fun and nicely put together. So if you want that old school 80s movie hit then I'd put this on for sure. So glad I got one of Zavvi's limited edition Steelbook, I really like the art work, it says a lot about the film. If they have any left and you like this sort of film then snap one up and maybe put a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses on and be part of the movie. Enjoy.

Aliens are already here!

One of John Carpenter's most interesting films, with a great performance from former wrestler Roddy Piper. The steelbook itself is basic but striking with Roddy donning the special glasses on the front. An essential purchase for any Carpenter fan!

Up to now I have three steelbooks of Carpenters classics and They Live is one of them. It is an underrated gem of a movie and was done on a pretty low budget at the time, as are most of Carpenters movies. As far as Sci-Fi Action movies go They Live is one of the best in its genre, loads of humour and the best performance from a wrestler turned actor in Roddy Piper as the lead role John Nada, with Keith David also doing great probably as good as he was in the other Sci-Fi classic of Carpenters I'm sure you will know which that one is. Overall if you are going to own a steelbook of a classic then you couldn't go wrong by Getting They Live.

Obey Consume Don't Choose

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Very good idea for Zavvi to make a steelbook of not so famous movie Watching "They Live" nowadays looks like a premonition. This SciFi movie foretold the actual consume society and way of life as if we were run by Aliens. The only regret about this movie is that I can't help imagine how I'd prefer it if the hero was played by Kurt Russel the usual John Carpenter's favorite actor. The Blu Ray is quite good without flaws I could noticed and you have many choice of languages and subtitle (English, French, Spanish,...) for both (dubbed and subtitle). Which is not said and very important for a french like me. By the way the french title movie is "Invasion Los Angeles"
