He was imprisoned 27 years for his heroic fight against apartheid. So what does Nelson Mandela do after he is elected president of South Africa? He rejects revenge, forgives his oppressors and finds hope of national unity in an unlikely place: the rugby field. Clint Eastwood (the National Board of Review’s 2009 Best Director choice) powerfully directs an uplifting film about a team and a people inspired to greatness. In a performance that won him NBR’s Best Actor Award and an Oscar nomination, Morgan Freeman portrays Mandela, who asks the national rugby team captain (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Matt Damon) and his underdog squad to do the impossible and win the World Cup. One team, one country. The universal language of sports has never spoken so thrillingly as in Eastwood’s Invictus.

Brilliant and not into rugby at all

I saw Invictus not convinced I was going to enjoy it. I have no interest in sport or rugby and wasn't sure what I was going to get. However I thought it was briliant, gripping. Maybe i'd knock off 1/2 a star for being a little overlong. Watch it.

An undeniably stirring, if predictable, account of how Nelson Mandela turned the Springbok team into a unifying force for his country. Non-rugby fans may find their patience tested, but Freeman’s magisterial performance carries it

Invictus in part

This was an unexpected little gem that seems a long way from the usual Clint Eastwood films, the political aspect of the film is carried off perfectly with Morgan Freeman as the great Mandela and his portrayal is perfect even capturing Mandela's body language. However unlike American Football films this film didnt seem to capture the true feel of a rugby match and this I felt is the movie's only downfall. I was expecting to see some flowing rugby acting which drew you into the scene but all we got looked wooden. I remember watching all this unfold at the real world cup and I do think that the film failed to capture the true intensity of the games played.

Very good indeed

Clint Eastwood directed this, and the old coot is getting better as he goes along. I think this is easily as good a film as Mystic River or Gran Turino, and Morgan Freeman was born to play Mandela. Fantastic stuff, even if you don't dig the rugger
