In the closing days of WWII, a British ship is attacked by a
German U Boat. What ensues is a massacre, and there is just one
survivor – Murphy (Peter O’Toole.)
A tough, indomitable sailor, Murphy escapes to a nearby island with
only one thought in his mind; to seek out the German vessel that
killed his crew and exact revenge by every means possible.
As he recovers from the ordeal on the island, he becomes close
to a young doctor (Sian Phillips) and a disillusioned oil worker
(Philippe Noiret) who try to persuade him to forget his plans.
But Murphy has become obsessed, and seeking vengeance
for his murdered comrades has become the sole purpose of his life.
