City of War: The story of John Rabe

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Well made movie with a high standard of acting of someone who has been almost forgotten by history. John Rabe was a Nazi party member in Charge of the Siemens factory in nanking who fell into disfavour with the Nazi government by helping thousands of Chinese citizens of Nanking when the Japanese army invaded the city and carried out acts of brutality that leave the mind stunned. The movie spares the viewer much of this horror and follows Rabe's story of his attempts to protect as many citizens of Nanking as he possibly can from the extreme brutality of the Japanese army. In china he is known as the Oscar schindler of China but has largely been forgotten by the rest of the World. This a story that has been waiting to be told. Well worth watching. It is mainly in English and German with some Chinese. I recommend it to anyone interested in this period of Chinese/japanese history.
