In which contingency and randomness save the world

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

A demented and glorious Japanese movie about how random decisions create the chain of events that save the world. In the 70s, a proto-punk band record a song for their last album that they know won't sell. In the 80s, 3 boys listen to it because of a story that certain people will hear a woman scream in the mysterious silent bit deliberately left on it. In 1999 Nostradamus cultists gather on a beach for the end of the world. In 2009, a girl falls asleep on the ferry and misses her stop. And in 2012 2 record-shop geeks and and an obnoxious git are the last people left in Tokyo. And by the end of the movie it all fits together and it all makes sense and it left me in tears. I really can't recommend this movie too highly; it's terrific and I can't really go into detail for spoilers - it's best watched from scratch, but you definitely need to pay attention! The closest comparison I can think of is 'Magnolia', though the events in 'Fish Story' are much more closely connected, but it has the same kind of flavour.
