Resident Evil: The Mercenaries (3DS)

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Being that it lacks a story mode, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries is more of a love letter to the "Mercenaries" special mode, that debuted in Resident Evil 3. The object of the game is mainly to kill as many enemies as possible in a variety of different missions and locales, in order to rack up as much points as possible in a time limit. The graphics are fantastic, especially for a hand-held console like the 3DS, with most locales from RE5 and a few from RE4 making an appearances. There's enough blood to keep everyone satisfied, and all the details on the character models are present, down to the identifiable stars patch on Barry's sleeve. The sound is not as impressive though. Character voices are muffled and some enemy vocals are limited especially in the Los Illuminados Zealots cases since they tend to repeat the same growl of "te voy a matar!". You should expect to spend a while trying to get all the costumes and skills too. The skills you obtain, augment your character's abilities, for things like better use of pistol weapons, or increased health, but it takes a while to level them up. It's not exactly the super scary horror-fest the old games were, but it makes a fun shooter game, and you can't go wrong with the controls either. I'd definitely suggest getting this game if you can.

Excellent!

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

For those of you who have enjoyed playing the "Mercenaries" bonus game on Resident Evil 4 and 5, then consider this part compliation and part upgrade. There is a lot more to this game than a simple "port". True there is no story arc, it is just simple challenge based missions, but they are FUN! You can also play co-op online, so that's a huge bonus too! The graphics and sound are good and the 3D works reasonably well too. A must have 3DS title in my opinion.
