Star Trek: The Next Generation was met with general skepticism. How could it be Star Trek with-out Kirk, Spock and McCoy? And the first couple of years were fairly rocky. It felt more childish than the original series. But it matured over time into a series that was both serious science fiction and character driven. It could go anywhere, from cultural misunderstanding to riffs on serious scientific theories, examinations in group dynamic to stories about terrorism, or torture, or the very nature of reality and consciousness. Possibly the most ambitious series to come out of America.

Star Trek The Next Generation, whilst getting off to a rough start in it's first and season seasons, very quickly becomes one of the best Trek series. Patrick Stewart brings a huge gravitas to his performance and is fantastic in even the silliest of episodes, however the real show stealer is Brent Spiner who manages to turn Commander Data into one of the most interesting and intriguing characters ever created in any of the Trek series. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who haven't seen the series yet but where the first two seasons might seem like rough viewing with the odd outstanding episode creeping in, stick it out, from season 3 onwards it just seems to get better and better.
