Ace Combat - More Arcade than Sim

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Ace Combat has been around for a fair few years now and the latest (Assault Horizon) was only released in late 2011. However this particular game is probably the most Arcade like of them. Not that, that is a bad thing but those looking for the more traditional Sim based air warfare should look elsewhere. The campaign is good but there are some 'boring' bits. There is one mission where you are the gunner in an AC130 and protecting ground troops. This looks a bit Call of Duty and as you are only controlling the aiming reticule (not flying) it does feel very much 'on-rails' and seems a long way from the traditional Air Combat games. This also comes with a MP mode so that you can take on anyone in dogfights to add to the overall experience after completing the campaign. Overall a good game and fun but with a few dull missions that really don't belong here.

Good game

Ace Combat Assault Horizon Limited Edition itself is very good. It is more an action/arcade game than a simulation. You have good graphics and a perfect game play. I really enjoyed it. The limited edition is also nice (and for the good price from Zavvi it was hard to turn down.)

Ace of Aces

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

This new installment from the Ace Combat series is nothing but refreshing. The battles in the skies are always fast paced and action packed and the story is a lot better than it usually is. The game is packed full of new features and now I couldn't imagine playing any ace combat game without them! My only drawback is that the game is a bit shorter than I hoped but still long enough to play for a few days. If you're a fan of Ace combat, this is a must-have!

Awful clone of HAWX. Avoid.

1 stars out of a maximum of 5

Bland, dull, repetitive. Words that perfectly describe this game, which is funny since they've tried so very hard to make it seem "cool" and "edgy" with lots of explosions and close ups and awkward camera angles, ala the Transformers movies. Unfortunately they forgot to design a game between these bits; the missions drag on for what feels like hours, with enemies appearing out of nowhere in endless waves. Missions rarely even have a point except "keep shooting", which would be ok if it was fun; it's not. Enemies are usually impossible to take out without the stupid "dogfighting mode", which you have to use over and over and over and over (to force you to look at the cool and edginess of it all). Not to mention that, when an objective finally does appear, the game only gives you a few seconds to actually deal with it (eg some tanks will magically appear next to your base and you have to blow them up; but oh hey, you have to shoot down the enemy planes that magically appeared first because they'll tear you up). It's amazing that they managed to make a game that's both boring and frustrating at the same time. This game wanted to be Ace Combat: Modern Warfare. What we got was a poor clone of HAWX, which is pretty shocking since HAWX wasn't that great to begin with...
