Dead or Alive Update

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

I pretty decent fighting game, which I enjoyed once I had figured out why none of the game modes were available. After inserting the disk and installing the game I was directed to apply a 200Mb compulsory update from Xbox Live. Once the update was installed, all of the game modes are crossed out and the only thing you can access is the in game marketplace. The trick is to find the free content pack download in the marketplace (another 200Mb) and install that as well before you can play the game. A bit dumb as it does not even put this compulsory content pack at the top of the marketplace list or really explain that you need to install it to play. Once past this I enjoyed the game.

Dead or Alive 5 is a serious contender for the best fighter of the year with interesting characters, an in-depth fighting system which is easy to play yet hard to master so appeals to a wide range of players and also brings something new from its predecessor. If you're only buying one fighting game this year, Dead or Alive 5 would find a perfect space on your shelf.

Not quite!

3 stars out of a maximum of 5

It's been 7 years since D.O.A. 4, and I expected something more from Dead or Alive 5! It's still a solid fighting game but why did they have to change the story mode? The fighting is the same with a few good adds, but I would have liked more characters and modes. Oh and you can't play the game without an internet connection on your Xbox!

Bouncing Comeback

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Dead or Alive 5 is a great fighting game. The story mode keeps you quite busy for some time. However, if you are looking forward for some smaller outfits, you'll have to pay for them.

Solid addition in the DOA series

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

If you're a fan of the DOA series, you can immediately get this Dead or Alive 5. Although it is more of the same, the subtle refinements, new stages and 5 new characters make it an enjoyable game to play. If you are a fighting game fan, and you already have played Tekken Tag Tournament 2, this is a good alternative, especially if you're looking for a slightly faster paced type of game. So whether you're new to the series or a veteran, this game offers enough value to grant a purchase!

DOA Is Back!

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Dead or Alive 5 went under a risky development after the abandoning of Team Ninja, but the final result is one of the best chapters of the series. There are few but significant new features, like the power hits, hanging by a thread, and the even more breath taking interactive arenas. Learning how to take advantage of the danger zones, counter attacks, holds and counter holds is essential to fully enjoy the game. Unfortunately, along with improvements there are also some issues, like the missing of an extensive tutorial, except for tips in story mode, which could cause newbies in the series to not fully understand the mechanics. Another downfall is the lack of endings for each character in arcade mode. That said, it's great value for money. It's a must-buy!
