Max Payne 3: Special Edition PC

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

Max Payne has grown older and due to his drug and alcohol abuse, he has become a bit slower. This change of pace for the Max Payne series is a welcome one as it shows that the developers are true to the source of the series. It also means for the player that they have to be more careful how they handle the situations the game is throwing at you. Cover has become more important and the addition of such a system is actually a good one. In the past two games, standing behind a wall to asses your current predicament was paramount, and with the cover system you can actually fight back while doing this. This does not mean that you're safe behind cover. Brasen enemies can suddenly be on top of you, so you still have to act fast as you try to clear the areas. Graphics-wise the game is a stunner, at least on PC. Fluid motions, an older Max and the neccessary effects all combine to create a believable world that sucks you right in. The new, more sunnier, setting is a huge contrast compared to the depressing story of Max's current job. Even though it misses the use of comics to convey the story present in the old games, replaced by more contemporary ways, it still manages to deliver. The inclusion of the LA DIY noise band Health to provide the ingame soundtrack was one of the best ever made. Especially during one of the scenes where the track Tears starts to play, creating an epic moment while shooting and dodging. Local Sao Paolo flavours are included in the soundtrack, making it one of the best of any game so far. On the multiplayer front the game also has a lot to offer, even giving you the ability to further developer your crew, as clans are killed within the Rockstar Social Club familiy, when Grand Theft Auto V comes out. All in all, Max Payne 3 is a game worthy of being in any collection. Whether you're a major fan of brutal action, a well-thought out story or a strong soundtrack, MP3 is definitely a game to keep an eye on.
