I was dying to see The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn film as I loved Tintin as a child! It didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed it. The animation is good, the characters are as I remember them and there is enough action to keep my sons amused. Great!

Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

I first saw this Tintin adventure at my local cinema early in 2012. There were two versions of the movie on offer: 2D and 3D, the latter requiring the rental of a pair of 3D spectacles with red & green filters. The additional surcharge for the spectacles was refundable upon their return to the ticket office. I have my own 3D spectacles but I did not use them on this occasion. I have not seen many 3D movies, the last one being Avatar, and whilst there have clearly been advances in 3D movie technology over the years I have not yet seen anything to beat the 3D reproduction quality found in IMAX cinematography which does not require viewing with special spectacles. IMAX 3D movies are very involving and eerily realistic. Feeling I might be disappointed I chose to watch Tintin in 2D rather than 3D because I felt there was probably going to be very little difference in quality between the two projection systems. To my amazement there was a very strong 3D impression watching the 2D movie. There were moments where the film appeared to have great depth but I think this was largely due to the animators' skill in creating the illusion of perspective. Whether the 3D version reproduces perspective to a better degree I cannot say because I never saw the 3D movie. I purchased, 'The Adventure of TinTin: the Secret of the Unicorn' because I was a great fan of Herge in my youth. I still am. I have a complete set of the Tintin adventures in cartoon (2D) form so I was looking forward to seeing the movie. The storyline is fast paced but remains true to the tradition of other Tintin adventures I have seen. The quality of the animation is astounding but therein lies a problem, for me at least, because I found myself subconsciously looking for flaws in the animation which detracted from my viewing enjoyment. This is why I deducted of 1-Star. I am hoping that viewing this 2D movie again on my HD, large widescreen TV at home I will be less critical of the imperfections, although minor, and watch the movie with the same open-mindedness and enjoyment I once did as a child. Maybe I will give it 5-Stars next time. This is a family movie and should appeal to all age groups.
