A mediocre start

3 stars out of a maximum of 5

This is the first film directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of Hayao Miyazaki. Although certainly not completely terrible, it is decidedly average, more than likely propped up by the other staff involved than Miyazaki Jnr. It lacks heart and it lacks purpose. It changes the plot of the novels upon which it is based for no apparent reason, and mashes them until they are barely recognisable. Certainly not a great start for Goro, although his next film From Up on Poppy Hill is a vast improvement, so certainly watch that when it is released instead. In the case of this film, possibly better to skip and just read the novels.
