Recapturing the Old Magic

5 stars out of a maximum of 5

I like many others grew up with Pro Evolution Soccer on the Playstation. It was a game renowned for just "feeling right". The transition to the next gen of PS3 and Xbox 360 was difficult for Konami as they struggled to get to grips with the new consoles. From 2008 PES was overtaken by the Fifa series until the vastly improved PES 2012 which was close to what PES should be. PES 2013 now provides a game which has recaptured the nostalgic feeling of what a game should be. Its unrivalled gameplay puts you in the heart of the action with exciting, spontaneous matches that are always different to the last. The game also looks fantastic with the best face recognition of any football game (and not just the famous players), alongside this are many new player animations that replicate real football extremely well. Game modes are a mixed bag with the ever popular Master League returning with more depth. Become a Legend is very similar to last years offering and could have done with more. The downside is that there is no League Mode in which you can play through a domestic season, but this can be done by picking a real squad in the Master League so there isn't a big sense of loss. The Champions League and Copa Libertadores are fully licensed again this year and offer fantastic presentation. Online has been revamped this year and the return of Master League Online is worthy of many gameplay hours. The main framework has been updated to provide a satisfying experience without long wait times. The main argument against PES is always in reference to the lack of licensed teams (which can be remedied by an online patch), but PES 2013 encompasses everything that is right about the beautiful game. This year Konami are doing their talking on the pitch.

PES 2013

No big change from last year. Defence / shooting improved (e.g. knuckle shoot), but running pace is slower. I hate the compulsory autosave, which makes ML annoyingly slow as it saves every time. I am a die hard PES fan and I am a little bit disappointed by the new game.

Back where it belongs.

PES 2013 is back to it's best, classic Pro Evo spliced excellently with modern features that it's been lacking the last few seasons. Epic.
