This is the first time I have had anything like this and don't know if there are similar alternatives. Overall it is quite good, it is surround sound but perhaps not like you might imagine. For example when I play a game like Dragon Age II, if I move the camera angle then the sound moves with it which can be a bit weird. So it's probably not true surround sound and if, like me, you opt for cheaper headphones like the X12s then spending considerably more on this device might not be worth it if all you want is decent sound delivered straight to your ears. There are different settings to play around with, ie surround sound angles and equalizer, but I didn't play around much with these, just the equalizer. It also took me a little while to figure out how to set it all up with the equipment I have, but it's easy when you know how! If you don't want to spend silly money on proper surround sound speakers then these probably are worth it, you do hear things which may get lost in the ether otherwise, little things which should help your gaming...I don't dare to play Dark Souls with it though, it would probably be way too scary!! Glad I bought it. Hope this helps
The Turtle Beach Earforce DSS 2 Processing Unit does work brilliantly. It's not so noticeable on games but on a Blu-ray film you get pure surround sound.
The Turtle Beach Earforce DSS 2 Processing Unit isn't great. I couldn't tell the different between the surround sound and the normal sound. It's not what I expected or what they claimed.
