I am a long term Gears fan (read: biased) and was really looking forward to Judgement. Two things which I love about the series is the story and coop multiplayer mode, Horde. So what did I get? Overall the story is fairly good, but not as good as it used to be. I actually liked the way it's told - one chapter per team member, but it didn't give me a sense of bonding at any point. Also, the usual small-talk, which delivered a vast amount of humorous moments seems weaker this time. Campaign gameplay is made more player friendly, by cutting it up into sequences, which allows you to literally to play for 10-15 minutes and then log off without losing any progress. Each section is also supported by extra commentary, which is nice. This makes going back to sections to mop-up even easier than before. Surprisingly, the extra testimonies (challenges) added a new level of fun, as rather than running the whole game with your favorite gnasher and boomshot (replace with your favourite weapons), you were forced to use different weapons. Best addition is probably the over run mode, which gives you a dynamic way to change from chainsawing locust as gears to hammering gears as mauler and friends every 10-15 minutes. The co-op part is what frustrated me the most. For some reason, instead of further improving the Horde mode, they decided to opt for a bot-mode Overrun mode. You have the same maps as in overrun (only 5 at the moment) and same static defenses, which can't be rebuilt. In addition, you cannot create a public game with difficulty of your choice. Why? If you don't have a group of friends to play with in private games, then you are stuck with pickup groups on hardcore difficulty. This means that you will in 9 out of 10 games and be eliminated by wave 6-8. Also, since you cant really improve your character in any meaningful way, you don't get a feeling of accomplishing anything by endlessly wiping out enemies. In Horde, you could restart a wave - not here. Another issue is that there is no "leveling up", as you used to have with Horde 2.0, having access to better defenses with more experience. To be honest, I wish that PCF would've borrowed from Mass Effect 3/Assassins creed multiplayer and implemented separate leveling paths for the 4 ingame classes or something similar. All together, Judgement is a good game, but with a huge amount of unused potential. I hope that DLCs will bring it more justice.
This is the most heinous entry in the series to date. While the single player is at least mildly enjoyable (if not grossly short) if you can get over the completely gutted controls and that you can now only carry 2 weapons. The multiplayer is however where this product has become a disgrace. They have removed locusts so now its only Cog vs Cog only. No active reloads, horribly designed levels that play atrociously because they are COD maps not gears of war maps and there is only 4 of them unless you want to pay for more. The entire weapon system has been changed for online, shotguns are now as crap as they were back in gears 2, you die from 1 shot of a flame thrower and a micro burst from a lancer will kill you too. The entire game has been ruined to the point it is no longer recognizable, it has now turned into a call of duty/halo game with a gears makeover. It is in no way shape or form a gears of war game, its almost indescribable how terribly they have destroyed a beloved franchise. If that wasn't enough there is less than half the content of the previous game, Gears of war 3.
Gears of War: Judgment is a great game with a completely overhauled campaign. The cooperative game play of the campaign is as enjoyable as you would expect, and the multi-player side of things is good too, with the addition of overrun and survival modes. If you're a heavy gear-head, or even just getting into it, this is one title you will enjoy. It is much better when played with friends.
Gears of War: Judgment is wicked and answers a lot of questions from the Gears universe. It has top graphics, sound, music, story and multi-player.
