It's not a Hard case. It's a "mostly firm" case - it feels more like a floatation device, less like a hard-shell suitcase if that makes sense. As such I can't say I'd expect it to withstand huge amounts of shock, but I'm not about to drop my WiiU Controller to prove the point. Having said that you need a case. The controllers cost a bit to replace, and you can currently only get them from Nintendo so it's imperative you look after the one that came with your console! And this, far as I can tell after a week's use, will do that job adequately.
