I bought Flicka 1-3 mostly thinking of my daughter, hoping to give her something that she would enjoy when with me (I do not have custody of my children and have very limited time with them, thus having to make the most of what relationship exists with them). I chose Flicka because I remember my sister liking it when I was a kid (I hated it). What I got was not what I expected. I didn't think I would like the films much and I was worried my son would not like them either. What happened was the opposite. My daughter is the one who is a little bored, even though the central character is female, and one would think, this would appeal to a girl. But it is my son who loves these films most, my daughter still likes them, but my son loves them. They've watched both twice already since I got them. Perhaps it's the fact that one of the core themes in these films has to do with relationships between fathers and daughters, and perhaps my daughter finds that a little too close to the bone which causes my daughter to feel a little reticent about them. It's hard to know what goes on in a young person's mind. Whatever, my son loves these films. So now, I am getting them all the Flicka stuff I can for them. I would highly recommend these films. As an adult and as a parent, I find them heartwarming, gentle, challenging, but also life affirming. It's good material for adults and their young children to enjoy together.
