Spearhead From Space was the only Classic Doctor Who story to be shot entirely on 16mm film, due to industrial action, and as a result, is the only Classic Who story to be able to receive a high-definition upgrade to Blu-ray. The upswing in quality is noticeable from the outset, with previously unseen little details, such as the fabric of clothing and the texture of actors' faces, being visible after spending over four decades buried in a standard-definition fog. The exclusive extras- including a look at the life and times of Jon Pertwee, a documentary about Caroline John, a restoration comparison and the original film elements that made up the opening title sequence - all help to make this an irresistible package for Classic Who fans. This is a very good transfer on blu-ray! Picture and Sound are remastered and restored. The Doctor never looked better! If you got the DVD (like me) go and upgrade to this excellent blu-ray!

This first story with the 3rd doctor played by Jon Pertwee excellently shows the sort of man he will be, as well as provides a thrilling enemy for him to face off with. The product itself is good quality, with the video playing clearly in Blu Ray quality.

As I understand it, this was shot on film rather than videotape due to a strikes effecting production. Which turns out to have been rather lucky, as the Beeb later erased loads of tapes to re-use them, and this transfer is decent quality. This is the first Jon Pertwee story and also the first Auton / Nestine appearance and permanently stuck in my then not quite 7 year old psyche. For those of you without the nostalgia factor, yes, you can tell the studio sets from the location filming, budget and lighting are definitely of the time and there is even an embarrassing struggle with an inanimate object (trying not to leave a spoiler). But the story is good and the old multi-episode format was much more satisfactory than the it's all over in 50 minutes style of the present version, plus of course it meant the cliffhanger endings to each episode. Loads of extras, more than I've yet got round to watching. All-in-all a very good package for old and new fans alike, so long as you can accept the technical level of TV at the time.
