Ballet of Fury

This is an auteur film if I’ve seen one, as Shinya Tsukamoto was the lead star, director, producer, art director, writer, editor and cinematographer for this indie film. If that isn’t enough of an achievement to intrigue someone to watch this, then I don’t what is. The film tackles gun culture, gang culture and suicide in a pessimistic light; but never depresses it’s viewer. This film is raw, in likes of La Haine (1995), and is a totally unique experience that I haven’t gotten out of Japanese cinema before. There is certainly a lot to admire from this film as it doesn’t hold back, but nor does it become obnoxious or sadistic.
