Four stories of modern society in China, the 'episodic' nature of the story may have had more dramatic effect if the stories could have been linked in some way. The first story of village corruption has the feel of a samurai warrior with a grudge, while the final story of a teenager moving between jobs ends in an obvious sudden manner that will leave most viewers thinking 'been here before'.
