Don't be put off by the fact that you've probably never heard of Blue Ruin, because it is a corker of a film. Shot on a tiny budget by an as-yet-undiscovered director, this is the sort of blinding underdog that Independent cinema is made for. Macon Blair blazes as Dwight, and proves that mining for outside talent in Hollywood can sometimes turn up wonders in the most unexpected of places. I won't spoil the film, but it suffices to say that this is a revenge movie where the main character knows about as much about killing as the average person knows about space travel. He is a fish out of water, dealing with red necks who take a life like they're are swatting a fly. There is a real undercurrent of dread permeating through the film, and sense that bad things will happen; which never quite leaves you. And when i say bad things, i mean that in a good way, not that, you know, the film is bad. Because that really, really, REALLY couldn't be further from the truth. Easily one of the break out films of 2014.
