‘Mona Lisa’ is commonly seen as a spiritual sequel to ‘The Long Good Friday’, which is a cracking British gangster title also available on Blu ray from Arrow Video. Both films feature Bob Hoskins in seminal performances, London’s criminal underworld, and were produced by the now-defunct ‘Handmade Films’. And whilst the pacy, thrill-ride that is ‘The Long Good Friday’ features a deliciously fiery Hoskins performance, explosions, and one of the best movie endings in history, ‘Mona Lisa’ is enjoyable for different reasons, offering an insight into London’s seedy underbelly and featuring a quieter, arguably more nuanced Hoskins at its core. With an enjoyable cameo from Michael Caine, Robbie Coltrane in an early role, and a standout turn from Cathy Tyson, ‘Mona Lisa’ is a British classic well worth investing your time in. It’s notable for its great tracking shots and perhaps influenced the fantastic ‘Save Me’ on Sky Atlantic, among many others.
