loved this film ... 3rd in the newly rebooted Star Trek universe. They just keep getting better and better

This does not move the Star Trek fantasy trailer into any new areas or places and doesn't give itself time to explore new areas. It is on a switchback road, careening out of control, bouncing from one big bang to the next. Too backward looking and referential [reverential?] to the past [both Star Trek and other action movies]. Big blowy up thing is broken. All the time and effort put into this fantasy could be better spent. Having said that it is great fun [in an uncomplicated, no-consequences sort of way] and it will probably be vastly successful given the eye-popping scale of some of the scenes. There are subtle changes in the team dynamic and some of the characters have moved on - we do get glimpses of everyday life, however distant - so it is not all doom and gloom! But it is immensely frustrating that characters we have seen for 50 years have not become more rounded or fuller, they still do their limited set of things and react in limited ways. OK we meet 'new' aliens but where are the people?
