At long last this unique movie has been released in the U.K. When I was working for Fox in Soho , it was originally released as a support feature to " Return of the Fly". It then disappeared into obscurity and was never screened on television in this country, despite it doing well on both VHS and DVD in U.S.A. Beverley Garland turns in a stalwart performance as the unfortunate female lead whose husband is involved in an horrific airplane crash leaving his body scarred and mangled. Determined to trace his whereabouts after he strangely disappears, she eventually traces him in the sinister and uninviting swamplands of Louisiana. This unusual horror yarn is magnifcently shot in monochrome widescreen and also benefits from an eerie score and some creditable acting histrionics from Miss Garland , Lon Chaney Jr( in a particularly menacing role) and Richard Crane as the unfortunate " Alligator Man". Some excellent makeup transforms him from human being to part reptile... In a minor supporting role Bruce Bennett(formerTarzan actor)can be spotted and that reliable veteran George Macready offers authority as the doctor who"plays"at being God. You wont find a more diverting way of spending a rainy summer afternoon than drawing the curtains and losing yourself in this welcome chapter of Gothic" charm!"
