James Cameron's love of using AI to tinker with and soften his new 4k releases (The Abyss, True Lies, Aliens) and completely scrub them of filmic grain is of no relevance here. The PQ and AQ are both fantastic. Demo material. But oh my God the packaging is dire. It's about an inch wider than a normal case so won't fit on your shelf with other discs. It has some folding sleeve inner packaging thing where all the discs are hidden behind cardboard and they're fiddly to get out. So A+ for the transfer, B+ for the film and C- for the stupid non-amaray monstrosity.
When asked which movies should I rate as 10/10, Avatar never quite reaches that top of the top list, but every viewing of the film always awakes strong emotions and you are just amazed how the film looks. The story might be recycled from the cowboys and indians genre, but still the movie works on many levels like few others. James Cameron keeps the plot pretty simple and creates visuals that are far from simple and it is a success recipe that has lasted through his career. The 4K media package that Avatar comes with is of great quality and this is the edition to keep on your home theater shelf. It contains all the various versions of the film in 4K. Also, 2 blu-ray discs loaded with extras are included. A true landmark movie that is worthwhile checking once a year at least with good company. Thanks Zavvi for your high quality service of providing us collectors with the leading editions.
