Out Of Sight

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Based on a novel by Elmore Leonard this is a wonderfully entertaining heist movie, coolly directed by Steven Soderbergh, stylishly scored by David Holmes and characterized by charismatic and sexy performances. George Clooney, in his first collaboration with Soderbergh, proved himself to be a major screen star as ex-con bank-robber Jack Foley. The chemistry between charmer Clooney and sultry Jennifer Lopez - in probably her best role - as FBI marshal Karen Sisco in pursuit of him is charged and erotic. The dialogue crackles. Sparks fly. The love scene between them is beautifully edited by Anne V Coates to Holmes' cool score. Cleverly structured around flashbacks, both the editing and Scott Frank's witty screenplay were Oscar-nominated. There are good supporting performances too from Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn and even a quirky cameo from Michael Keaton. Regarded by some as the sexiest film ever made, Out Of Sight was voted by the National Society of Film Critics as the best film of 1998. This movie is effortlessly entertaining - witty, cool and sexy.
