Could've been so much better!

In its own right, the Thomas Crown Affair is an unremarkable film. Adapted from the 1968 original, there are some knowing nods to elements of the Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway classic that a fans can appreciate. Unfortunately, Rene Russo's performance is dire! At times, she attempts to emulate the sublime and haunting mystique of Dunaway's character, but falls so far short it's embarrassing. For me, this is the fundamental failing of this film. Other failings are the inelegant bumbling through the plot, which is largely the same as the original, but carelessly delivered. The only saving grace is Brosnan's performance, who is very well suited to the role. I'd recommend that true fans of the original watch this out of pure filmographic interest, but nothing more.
