We absolutely loved this series and I was so tickled to give this to a die hard fan on Christmas. Too bad they couldn't watch it due to being a region 2 DVD (we are in USA, region 1). I had no knowledge of regions and their restrictions and there is no mention of it anywhere on the website. So much for sitting around in our pjs on Christmas Eve watching DVDs. Bah humbug to you!
Deep Space Nine is the least known of the Star Trek series but probably the most intense. The start is quite slow, but this first season builds the foundation for a crescendo of good stories which are among the best of star trek. And most of all, at this price you cannot go wrong!
This is the first season and spin-off of the "next generation" franchise and to the creators credit it is substantially different from Star Trek: the next generation. To start with the show is set on a space station so there's no exploring, but it's a hub for interstellar travel. The station itself is far darker and grimier than the shiny/sterile Enterprise too. Due to these differences it takes a little while to adjust to the new setting and characters but there are several interesting new characters and aliens such as Odo and Dax and over the course of the first season all the characters get an episode to themselves. The only problem is that it's very episodic (which some may see as a plus) and still suffers from the bright optimism of the Star Trek Franchise, despite trying to take it down darker routes. The good thing is that this show gets better with every season and while season 1 is probably the weakest of the set it is still interesting to see where it all began and how the show evolved. This box set is also excellent value and is slim-line meaning it doesn't take up too much shelf-space.
